How Did Texas Get Here?
In 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court removed the federal law that prohibited states from legalizing sports betting, opening the door for states to decide individually whether or not to legalize and regulate it. Now, Texas has an opportunity to be a leader in regulating sports betting and give Texans the opportunity to participate in the games they love.
Why Legalize and Regulate Sports Betting?
PROMOTE INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM
Texas is known for protecting and upholding individual liberty and letting individuals decide what is right for them. Allowing a referendum on sports betting gives voters a choice and a chance to decide whether they want sports betting in Texas.PROTECT TEXAS FROM AN INDUSTRY OPERATING IN THE SHADOWS
EKG gaming estimates that in Texas, over $6 billion a year in is placed in illegal bets through unregulated, offshore betting operators. Texans using unregulated sports books have no guarantee that their information is safe or that they will see the payout of their bets. While we would not look to grow the size or scope of government with legal sports betting, a smart and efficient regulatory structure would protect consumers and promote transparency.SUPPORT PROPERTY TAX RELIEF
Most recent estimates show that legalized sports betting would result in over $648 million in the first 5 years. That revenue could be used as a growing, dedicated general revenue source to lower property taxes – without raising taxes on Texans.Sports Betting Alliance in the News
