PROTECT LEGAL SPORTS BETTING IN NORTH CAROLINA

North Carolina’s legal sports betting system is working. It’s competitive, highly regulated, and has already delivered $287 million for the state, funding thirteen state university athletic departments, youth sports, the Major Events, Games, and Attractions Fund, and the General Fund. So why change it?

The bottom line: A tax hike would hurt North Carolina sports fans and hand the advantage to untaxed competitors that pay nothing to the state.

When legal betting becomes less competitive, consumers shift to sweepstakes casinos, prediction markets, crypto casinos, and offshore sportsbooks, where there is no age verification, no consumer protection, and no revenue for the state.

North Carolina’s current sports betting tax is fair, working as designed, and already funding key state priorities.

The Economics of Legal Sports Betting

More than 90% of bets placed with legal sportsbooks are repaid to customers in winnings. The rest goes toward technology, responsible gaming tools, local partnerships, and marketing. In states that have raised sports betting taxes, customers ultimately pay the price.

a Win for All

North Carolina’s competitive tax rate and market structure give consumers access to a wide range of sportsbooks and wagering options. Any increase to the previously negotiated tax rate threatens existing relationships with North Carolina partners, including the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, professional sports teams, the PGA Tour, and NASCAR. This arrangement keeps money in North Carolina and supports the partners the legal market was built to serve.

Illegal sports betting hurts consumers

Legal online sports betting offers a regulated, accountable alternative to the illicit offshore marketplace and the rapidly growing universe of untaxed platforms targeting North Carolina consumers.

Experts estimate customers spend tens of billions on the illegal sports betting market each year, depriving state and local governments of significant tax revenue. These sites offer no consumer protections, no age verification, and no responsible gaming safeguards. Users routinely fall victim to scams and find themselves unable to withdraw their funds.
