I am a constituent in your district writing to ask you to support legalizing and regulating sports betting in Texas. As a state that values and upholds personal freedom, Texans deserve the opportunity to safely participate and place bets on the sports we love.

A proposed constitutional amendment (HB 2070/HJR 97 by Rep. Huberty and SB 736/SJR 39 by Sen. Hinojosa) would allow Texans to make the decision for themselves and vote on whether or not to legalize sports betting.

Texans are already participating in sports betting, with an estimated $5 billion in illegal bets placed each year. However, there is no current oversight or consumer protections for participants’ money or personal information in the current environment. Implementing a smart and efficient regulatory framework means protecting consumers, preserving the integrity of sporting events, and allowing law enforcement to hold bad actors accountable.

What’s more, Texas is facing major budget challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Revenue from sports betting could immediately bring in as much as $180 million for our current budget and this number could grow as high as $400 million for future state budgets. This is a significant amount of money that could go toward state programs in education, health care, or even property tax relief.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court allowed states to reconsider sports betting in 2018, 25 states have legalized it, including some of our neighboring states. We don’t want to fall behind, and we certainly do not want to allow illegal sports betting to continue which does not benefit the state at all.

By allowing a statewide referendum on sports betting, we are simply asking lawmakers to give voters the choice to allow sports betting in Texas. Once again, I am encouraging you to support sports betting and allow voters to have a say on this issue.

Thank you for your time,
